
Gospel music as we know it began in the late 19th century. However, a common theme of most gospel music is praise, worship or thanks to God, Christ, or the Holy Spirit. Gospel music is composed and performed for many purposes, including aesthetic pleasure, religious or ceremonial purposes, and as an entertainment product for the marketplace.

Like other forms of Christian music the creation, performance, significance, and even the definition of gospel music varies according to culture and social context. Gospel music is music that is written to express either personal or a communal belief regarding Christian life, as well as (in terms of the varying music styles) to give a Christian alternative to mainstream secular music. Gospel music, can in crude terms, be though of as a sort of cross between popular music and hymns, for a better definition see below. Job, the lyrics are based on the last words of Nokseng, a Garo man, a tribe from Meghalaya which then was in Assam, who along with his family decided to follow Jesus Christ in the middle of the 19th century through the efforts of an American Baptist missionary.

This is from the ‘Psalms Unplugged’ series being produced in Nepal. And the beautiful singing by Anjali Nepali is also to be noted. Part of this is the jazzy bansuri flute played by John Rashin Singh, and the contemporary keyboard harmonizations by Anish Jerry Lama.

The musical feel is quite different from how I learned to sing the hymn growing p in a Baptist church in the USA. This lovely version is arranged and performed by acquaintances in Nepal, recorded in 2018.
